Every clinician remembers the course that made them second-guess themselves. For Dr Shibin Chang (@500layers), it was an early composite masterclass that felt more frustrating than inspiring.

“After a course made me want to give up on composites, I practiced on models at home until I couldn’t get it wrong,” Shibin recalls. “The name @500layers stuck — it’s a reminder that consistency beats talent every time.”

That decision to head home and keep practicing launched a quiet revolution in his personal workflow.

From Dundee Graduate to Award-Winning Clinician

After qualifying from the University of Dundee in 2022, Shibin set out to master composite resin. He began focusing intently on anterior restorations before expanding his system to posterior teeth. But instead of relying on innate talent, Shibin took a pure repetition route: if natural flair wouldn’t get him there, sheer volume would.

Setting up a dedicated home studio, Shibin completed over 1,000 practice restorations on typodont models. Night after night, he refined his layering techniques, mirror-finish polishing protocols, and chairside predictability.

Along the way, he also showed what true adaptability looks like. Practising with a C7 spinal cord injury (tetraplegia), Shibin proved that clinical focus, clever ergonomic setups, and determination far outweigh physical boundaries.

The Power of Precision Optics

A major turning point in Shibin’s journey came when he stepped up his visual clarity using microscopic optics. Trying the ZEISS EXTARO microscope for the very first time, he earned the prestigious “Bracelet” award from Dr. Sche — a testament to how high-magnification optics can transform precision work.
